The Gallery’s East Building was constructed within the 1970s on a lot of the remaining land left over from the unique congressional action. Andrew Mellon’s children, Paul Mellon and Ailsa Mellon Bruce, funded the building. M. Pei, the up to date structure was accomplished in 1978 and was opened on June 1 of that year by President Jimmy Carter. The new constructing was built to house the Museum’s assortment of recent work, drawings, sculptures, and prints, as well as examine and research facilities and places of work.
